Gather at the Malecón on the Bay of La Paz

As a relaxed travel destination, La Paz possesses boundless natural resources and maintains an authentic small town feel. While there are certainly many who come to the area to “get away from it all,” the Malecón is the place to reconnect and celebrate the spirit of the Baja. This local landmark stretches for more than 5 km along the bay and serves as the gathering place for people of all ages to interact and enjoy life in La Paz.

At any hour of the day or night, you can find friendly and engaging locals enjoying life at this city center. Residents enjoy walking or jogging along the statue-lined walk overlooking the Bay of La Paz. The walkway is popular with dog walkers, children on big wheels, joggers and bicyclists. They join with family, friends and neighbors at the sidewalk cafes, coffee shop, ice cream shoppes, street vendors, and casual watering holes to discuss their recent adventures and experiences.

In El Centro, opposite the Municipal Pier, the Malecón has spilled across the street, where the first of many downtown streets has been transformed into an arcade where musicians often perform against a backdrop of magnificent artwork. Courtyard walls at the Malecón have been graced with a series of artwork by a variety of artists, including a giant mural by world renowned artist Robert Wyland and the iconic La Paz Dove of Peace sculpture near the new transit station. Many of the newest artworks are from artist Octavio González. Cast in bronze on the mainland and standing 5 to 11 feet tall, the statues include a breaching whale, an in-flight Manta, and a mermaid playing with a dolphin. His works are available in miniature at many local art galleries as well as online.

At night, particularly Friday and Saturday nights, the Malecón becomes the place to see and be seen. The Malecón is unspoiled, safe and inviting. Whether you indulge in delicious local cuisine, dance until the wee hours, or explore historic museums and shop for authentic Mexican arts and crafts, the Malecón is where you go to relax and enjoy the beauty of life in La Paz.
